The fact that so many of those courses might be lame isn't reason enough to accept the disappearance of such courses. We should do all we can to improve those courses, especially because children learn languages more readily when they're younger. It won't much help the prospects of world language education in this country if we keep raising monolingual generation after monolingual generation.<br><br>As for the shift from German to Arabic and Chinese....
